Here you can find out in 5 steps which special features must at least be taken into account when selecting suitable Ex luminaires. Products matched to the individual area of application mean safety, durability and economy.
Clarify whether your project involves one or more areas with potentially explosive atmospheres.
These areas are subject to strict requirements and measures according to EU Directive 1999/92/EC (implemented in Austria as VEXAT – Ordinance on Explosive Atmospheres) and further regulations. The Ex areas are subdivided according to defined specifications and require a special design of the emergency luminaires.
Such conditions can occur, for example, in chemical factories, cleaning plants, paint shops, refineries, mills or tank farms for flammable substances.
Depending on the type of flammable substances, you are confronted with different conditions, which must be taken into account when selecting Ex luminaires. A distinction is made between gas Ex areas (gas, mist, vapour), dust Ex areas (dust) and mine workings at risk of firedamp (mining). The frequency and sustained duration of a potentially explosive atmosphere determine the defined Ex zone classification according to EN 60079-10-1 and EN 60079-10-2.

The temperature class(es) of the units or luminaires for gas Ex areas are determined on the basis of the ignition temperature of the respective gas or vapour. The table above gives an overview.
The max. enclosure surface temperature for dust Ex areas must be specified by the operator. Which temperature class or max. enclosure surface temperature is relevant in your case?
Gases, vapours and dusts are divided into substance groups IIA / IIB / IIC or IIIA / IIIB / IIIC depending on their properties. The substance subgroups IIC and IIIC have the highest equipment requirements.

In hazardous areas, further environmental conditions and special features must be taken into account in order to be able to select suitable Ex escape sign and emergency luminaires. Parameters that can be mentioned are the prevailing ambient temperature, the given humidity conditions and the resulting protection class, the required IK impact resistance level, UV influences due to solar radiation and chemical influences.

The CONCEPT Ex and the INDUSTRY Ex X32 are suitable for use in gas Ex areas of zone 2, as well as for dust Ex areas of zone 22 and are certified accordingly. The CONCEPT Ex is also suitable for use in gas Ex areas of zone 1, as well as for dust Ex areas of zone 21.
The zone classification depends on the frequency and duration of the occurrence of a potentially explosive atmosphere and is regulated by standards.
The certified device category or device protection level confirms that the luminaire is suitable for use in the respective Ex zones. Depending on the existing Ex zone, at least one corresponding device category or device protection level of the luminaire used must be available.
