Invisible warning system to prevent panic in the event of a fire
If there are people in the room, a clearly visible sign in front of the entrance reads "Caution: radiation". This sign warns all persons against actively using the laser indoors.
Monument protection
Due to the building’s listed status, this project involved overcoming several technical and design hurdles. Low-beam emergency lighting had to be installed to meet the requirements for escape route lighting. At the same time, however, the light was not allowed to be scattered by the existing spherical luminaire, but had to be directed underneath it, past the sphere.
An additional challenge was that no emergency lighting circuit was available. This made it necessary to use a radio self-contained battery system (CMR). A technically elegant solution with a hidden antenna was desired, but failed due to the range: the standard components did not provide the necessary radio connection in the structural situation as soon as the antenna was not visibly installed.
In collaboration with our special solutions department, an innovative design was developed in which an electronic ballast (EB) was positioned above the spherical luminaire and the lighting engineering below it, both components being custom-made. The ECG was cleverly placed in a housing that also serves as an antenna mount: the antenna is installed in it facing top, which ensured the necessary radio range without disturbing the external appearance.
A central element of the project was the use of 3D printing. Both the antenna mounting and the housing for lighting engineering were specially designed and produced using 3D printing. In order to direct the light downwards and prevent it from scattering over the spherical luminaire, a laser-cut light guide made of PMMA (Plexiglas) was used. This was precisely adapted to the contour and guided in such a way that the light is deflected sideways past the sphere and shines downwards.
In this way, it was possible to create discreet but compliant escape route lighting that blends seamlessly into the existing lighting system while also taking the structural conditions into account.
