Conversion and alternative solutions

The EU legislation on RoHS (2011/65/EU) and Ecodesign Regulation (2019/2020/EU) has sealed the end for conventional lamps in 2023. This step is intended to counteract the high environmental impact, environmental damage and the massive reduction in natural resources through sustainable solutions. A detailed list of banned light sources on the European market is shown in the corresponding graphic.

For emergency lighting lamps ≤ 15 mg mercury per lamp, the deadline has been extended to 24 February 2027 in accordance with ANNEX III of the RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU. However, it makes sense to start thinking about retrofitting now.

Although stocks may still be used up after these deadlines, imports into the EU are prohibited by law. But what alternatives are there and what needs to be considered?

Relevant details on the conversion

In view of the new legal situation and the limited availability of remaining stocks, it is essential to tackle alternative solutions and conversions. However, relevant details need to be taken into account for the solutions currently available on the market (e.g. retrofit lamps). Emergency luminaires are subject to strict testing and manufacturer regulations, which must be complied with.

First of all, the ZVEI – German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association recommends contacting the manufacturer of the emergency lighting components so that professional refurbishment can be guaranteed.

Once the refurbishment has been carried out, the unrestricted emergency lighting function must continue to be guaranteed. Furthermore, it must be ensured that electronic components and light sources are compatible, that there is no interference with the automatic testing systems and that all lighting requirements in accordance with ÖNORM EN 1838 are met. Further requirements are listed in the following information letter.

Important note

The conversion can lead to a significant change compared to the original state, whereby the person or company carrying out the conversion becomes the manufacturer of the new luminaire version. This means that they assume responsibility and liability for the functionality of the new product and must carry out a new conformity assessment and CE labelling.

din-recommendation

Due to these challenges, we recommend the use of tested and certified LED products, such as our LED replacement inserts. With the LED replacement inserts, you can convert to LED with minimal effort without changing the wiring and existing luminaire housings. You also save up to 67% energy. The conversion is worthwhile as the solution is a safe and CE-certified alternative to conventional light sources and amortisation is achieved after just a few years.

Do you have more specialised requirements and have not yet found a solution? With our individual solutions department, we can implement your wishes quickly and easily.
