Integration of emergency lighting with special space requirements

The challenge

The Rainer barracks in Salzburg have been owned by a renowned Austrian company since 2012. After several years of planning and development, work began on adapting the historic site buildings. As parts of the barracks are listed buildings, they were excluded from the extensive construction work.

The challenge was to integrate separate emergency lighting into the existing general lighting without changing the structure of the building. In addition, the new luminaires had to be adapted so that they did not cast any shadows on the light distribution of the existing lighting. In other words, there had to be no noticeable difference in colour. Another difficulty was that the existing lighting was not DC-compatible (direct voltage) and therefore could not be controlled via the emergency lighting system. A safe solution also had to be found for this.

The solution

As the general lighting was not DC-compatible and therefore could not be controlled via our emergency lighting system, a separate emergency lighting system had to be integrated. After numerous tests and adjustments in the lighting laboratory, we finally found a solution to integrate the emergency luminaires in accordance with the requirements of the construction site and the client. Due to the limited space, the electronic ballast (EB) and the LED board had to be housed very compactly so that the glass cover would still fit.

These careful adaptations made it possible to realise a solution that meets the high requirements and preserves the historical ambience.
